#EverythingFashion: Winter Edition

Hey Everything Refiloe frans 😄 (fan friends – a new term I’ve learned from the series Schitt’s Creek, that I’m going to abuse for a while). Not only do I appreciate the show for its comedy, but it features very beautiful fashion forward pieces. I tend to blab a lot, look at that, 2 sentences later and I still haven’t introduced myself 😑. My name is Tumi & I am here to talk about #EverythingWinterFashion with you.

Before you take fashion tips from me, I think it’s best I give you a brief background of why the good sis was chosen to do this piece. It’s simple really; I am passionate about fashion and my background with fashion started from a very young age. When I was 7-year-old, my dolls had a wardrobe with more options than an adult has. I would spend hours sketching, getting inspired by my mom’s magazines, and destroying my little sister’s clothes, creating custom pieces for my dolls. Then I grew up and I became my own project, it took quite some time for me to figure out my style. Being broke and all, affording your real style can be a challenge, alas, we move. To sum it up, I know a bit about fashion from years of self teaching and passion.

So, let’s talk winter fashion. I believe winter clothes should be 3 things: 1. Warm (the most obvious), 2. comfortable, and the 3rd and most important, FABULOUS! I absolutely believe that your winter clothes should be practical, you never want to be cold and uncomfortable at the same time! It’s the most stressful thing anyone can go through. I have been in situations where I wasn’t dressed for the weather and I literally couldn’t function properly. All I could think about was how I just wanted to be home with my kidneys covered.

Was this outfit not bomb AF? Anyway, for all its 🔥, all the winter essentials were in impractical proportions. The skirt was made of a thick material, but it exposed my legs. The jersey was a knit, but it was cropped and it was the type of knit that let’s air through. Even though it was fabulous, it lacked the no. 1 most important element, which is keeping the body warm.  Stockings and 2 long sleeve tops under the jersey would have saved my kidneys a lot of strife!

With that said, don’t limit yourself during winter. You have so much freedom to make your outfit stand out and you can build on your outfit to keep your body warm!

Let’s talk about my absolute must have winter essentials! These are the items that I feel every person should have. They will elevate your outfits and give them “that thing”, and also make those cold winter days warmer and fabulous.

Polo Necks

If you were born in the 90s, I’m sure you share this sentiment: The mini fit you used to throw when your mom would make you wear polo necks with those corduroy pants! Those things were so itchy, I never thought that a polo neck would be at the top of my list of must have winter items, but it is! A good fitted polo neck has this effortless chicness that makes me feel so well put together, and you can pair it with all the items I have listed below. That is why it came at number 1.

Trench Coats

Another item that turns any boring outfit into a fashion statement! A good fitted trench coat will have you looking like Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly from the Devil Wears Prada. What’s great is that, if you still want to wear your shorter dresses/skirts, you can throw over a long trench coat and you are winter ready!

Leather Jackets

I’ve always been a leather jacket person. I owned quite a few styles and colours of leather jackets before they all got stolen in 2016 😒. I guess the thief also knew that they are a definite must have 🤣. There is something so badass about a properly cut leather jacket, and a proper black one isn’t going out of style anytime soon.

Warm Knitted Jerseys

I am crazy about knit and here is why, a good knit is a perfect winter statement on its own, and you will find so many options in stores right now. My absolute favourite knits are chunky jerseys. Not only do they keep you warm, but a good one is a real head turner!

Oversized Blazers

An oversized blazer in a bright and vibrant shade will brighten up any dull winter outfit, and it will bring the fab factor to your outfit. I must stress though, it’s important for the blazer to be oversized, so that you can bulk up on warm clothing underneath the blazer, without looking like you are going to pop.

Boots

Knee high boots, ankle boots, combat boots! You name them and I’m there. I absolutely love boots. The right boot can ensure your outfit goes from 0 to a 100, real quick.

Complete your outfit with hats and scarves. I’d also add gloves, but I’ve always found them a bit impractical.

The beauty of winter is that you can bulk up on your items. I must also add that you should not limit yourself when it comes to colours. During my varsity years, I would drown myself in black during winter. Nowadays, I wear black in moderation. I think black is very hassle free and simple to dress up, but a little creativity won’t hurt you this winter. Go for burgundy, olives, nudes, pinks, etc. I’ve seen people going for lime bomber jackets which shows that bright colours are not limited to summer.

I hope this piece was inspirational and can help you with your winter style. What are your winter essentials? Let me know in the comments and if this was somewhat useful, please share it😊!
