At-Home Date Night Ideas Under Lockdown

Date night used to mean going out to a nice restaurant, enjoying a movie at the cinema, a romantic picnic at the park, going to an art gallery, etc. The possibilities were endless, and then coco v happened. Now we are confined to our homes, and that can dampen the romance a little. Well, it doesn’t have to. I am going to share with you some tips to keep it sexy and romantic, in these trying times. Just because we are under lockdown, doesn’t mean romance is. I am a huge romantic, can you tell? ๐Ÿ˜ I love LOVE, I love everything about it, I think it is the most fulfilling thing; to love and to be loved.

An at-home date night can offer a cozier (and cheaper) alternative to the traditional weekly or monthly date night that involves expensive concert tickets, overpriced movie snacks, or making a reservation months in advance. Although all of those activities are certainly fun, at-home dates can be just as special, romantic, and entertaining. All it takes is a little planning and creativity. Who knows? You might discover that you like at-home date nights even more, even if you are not forced to be home.

1. GAME NIGHT FOR 2

A little friendly competition can get the sparks flying again in your relationship. Set up a lot of different games, put on some fun music, and spend a few hours challenging each other, you can even turn them into drinking games if that tickles your fancy. Keep a tally of who wins and decide what the reward is, for the winner. You can also have a virtual game night via video calling, just set a date and time with your boo, get your favourite snacks and drinks, and get creative and keep it fun.

2. HAVE A NETFLIX MARATHON

Netflix has so many incredible shows and movies. One of my favourite things to do is snuggle up on the couch with my favourite snacks and drinks, with my favourite person next to me and totally get lost in a new show. Check out Blood & Water while you are at it, it’s really really good. The only thing I did not like about it, is that there weren’t enough episodes, that’s how much I enjoyed it.

3. PREPARE A NICE CANDLELIGHT DINNER

Recreate your favourite date at home. Cook a nice meal together, set the table restaurant style, and dress up and look cute for your date. If you have a balcony or a garden, use it for extra ambiance of dining under the stars, and enjoy yourself. You can also use this one if you want to be romantic and spoil your partner, you can prepare the meal by yourself, set the table, and even create a menu of what you are serving, if you are extra like I am. For extra oomph, try dining in the nude to really spice things up. You’ll find yourself thinking, “We should come here more often!”๐Ÿ˜œ

4. HAVE A LIVING ROOM PICNIC

Nothing like a cosy picnic. This is one of my faves, because you can really get creative here. We normally whip out the air mattress for extra comfort, and put it right in the middle of the living room, put on a blanket, and our favourite picnic treats. Add some background music, and you got yourself a date. Don’t forget to dress up… or not. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰

5. HAVE A BOOK CLUB

Pick up a book you both love or have been wanting to read, and take turns reading it to each other for a unique date night you can enjoy any time. If you and your partner speak different languages, get books in your respective languages and read to each other. You get to learn a language and listen to the love of your life read to you, what more can you ask for?

6. GET CRAFTY

Create a vision board of things you want to achieve and places you want to travel to together. This is a fun way to plan your future and just daydream and get excited about the future. God knows we need the excitement because it’s pretty difficult to be hopeful & excited in the middle of a pandemic.

7. INDULGE IN AN AT-HOME SPA DAY

Warm up some massage oil, slip into comfy spa style robes and slippers, run a steaming bath for 2 and drop in a nice bath bomb, and put on some soothing face masks. Once you’ve got your bodies feeling like African butter, you can shower together to rinse off the massage oils and dry each other off with big, fluffy towels. Thank me later. ๐Ÿ˜‰

8. WORKOUT TOGETHER

Couples who sweat together, stay together. Search for an at-home, no equipment workout on YouTube to get your blood flowing together. Exercise also boosts endorphins, so you’ll get the warm and fuzzies for your partner while you’re getting fit together. Win win.

9. HAVE AN EPIC DANCE PARTY

If you and your partner love to dance, but arenโ€™t always keen on doing it in front of people (like me and mine), this is your chance. Find playlists that you love and queue them up (having a few drinks before and during doesnโ€™t hurt๐Ÿป). And if you want to make things really fun, try learning an entire dance routine together from YouTube.

10. HAVE A KARAOKE NIGHT

Find karaoke versions of songs on YouTube or turn on the subtitles to create your own karaoke night right in your living room. Find the cheesiest ballads you can think of, or belt out your favorite jams from high school and uni. Brooms and mops make great “microphone stands,” or you can go the classic hairbrush route. Your neighbours might hate you for this but hey, anything for romance, right?

11. WRITE EACH OTHER LOVE LETTERS

Add a little romance to your stay at home date night idea and write each other love letters. You can share them right away or pick a pre-determined date to read them to each other. Itโ€™s so rare nowadays to receive a hand written love letter, and it can feel really nice to have love professed to you in writing. I absolutely love this romantic date night idea at home.

12. VISIT A MUSEUM

Did you know you can visit many museums online? Many museums have an online collection that you can access for free. Get your artsy fix and check out one of these museums you can visit online:

You can spice up your virtual visit by playing games like having to pick one piece of art from each page to put in your house or a drinking game, like every time you see flowers, take a sip of your drink. Get creative man.

13. LEARN SOMETHING NEW TOGETHER

Choose a random subject and find some interesting videos on YouTube. Watch them together and discuss over dinner โ€” it might be more fun than you think. When else do you take specific time to learn new things as an adult? Besides the life lessons that aren’t always so kind in their teachings.

14. HAVE A VIDEO GAME MARATHON

Spend a few hours challenging each other to video games you have at home. This is also a great stay at home date night idea if only one of you knows how to play video games. The video game expert/enthusiast can teach the other partner.

15. HAVE AN AT-HOME COOKING COMPETITION

Without telling each other what you plan on cooking, have a friendly cooking competition at home. To make things even more interesting, donโ€™t do any shopping beforehand โ€” use the ingredients you already have on hand and judge each other’s dishes on presentation, taste and creativity. (I have been watching a lot of Masterchef lately, so competitive cooking is my vibe right now.)

I hope these tips bring a little spark and excitement into your relationship. And remember, most of these you can do over video call if you are not with your partner, just put your creativity cap on and tweak them to suit your situation. Hang in there fam, hopefully you’ll see your bae soon.

If you have any tips/ideas that I didn’t mention, please let me know, I’d love to know what you guys are getting up to while social distancing. You might even inspire my next date night.

Until next time beloved.

xoxo, Refiloe ๐Ÿ˜˜
